It investigates how and why organizations invite external developers to participate in their innovation, often catalyzed by contests and the provision of open data, with the aim of designing digital services that go beyond the capability of the organizations themselves. Taking a contest driven approach to innovation, the book provides an accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the area of open digital innovation. It offers an analysis of key scientific principles underlying open innovation and based on these provides practical tools for improving the digital innovation process. Furthermore, the book introduces instruments for managing innovation contests, in particular for overcoming innovation barriers and for harnessing the power of motivating factors. It serves as a text for graduate and undergraduate courses in digital innovation and entrepreneurship, but is also a valuable resource for managers as well as policy makers in the field of open digital innovation.

Autor

Anders Hjalmarsson holds a Senior Researcher's position at Viktoria Swedish ICT and an Assistant Professor position at University of Borás, Sweden. His research includes case study, survey and design science research on innovation of digital technology, mainly within the transport and vehicle industry, based on open platforms and collaborative approaches. Anders received his Ph.D. in Information Systems Development from Linköping University in 2009. He has written 30 conference and journal papers. His research has received grants in excess of $ 1 million, from national and regional research agencies.

Paul Johannesson holds a position as professor at Stockholm University, where he works in the area of Information Systems. Johannesson has published work on federated information systems, translation between data models, languages for conceptual modeling, schema integration, process integration, ontologies for conceptual modeling, and value modeling. He has been a member of several EU projects on knowledge based systems and requirements engineering. He has been the project leader of and participated in several national projects on information integration, the use of IT in teaching information systems design, process modelling and integration, and IT in health care. He is the author of about 200 papers published in international journals and conferences. Johannesson has co-authored a textbook on conceptual modeling published by Prentice-Hall and a textbook on design science published by Springer.

Gustaf Juell-Skielse holds a position as Associate Professor at Stockholm University, where his research and teaching focus on enterprise systems and digital service innovation. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer and Systems Sciences from Stockholm University in 2011 and a M.Sc. from The Royal Institute of Technology in 1989. He is the project leader for several national and international research and development projects. Prior to his academic career he was a strategic management consultant. Juell-Skielse is the author of about 50 papers and a textbook on competence management published by Liber.
