Based on long-term mobile ethnographic research connecting Zanzibar, the Tanzanian mainland, Mombasa, Dubai and London, this volume takes up this challenge by exploring the translocal space emerging around contemporary Swahili trade. Examining translocality as a lived experience, the book succeeds in refining often overly abstract notions of mobile settings and relational space.

Seit 2011 arbeitet Julia Verne als wissenschaftliche Assistentin in der Arbeitsgruppe Wirtschaftsgeographie am Institut für Humangeographie der Goethe Universität Frankfurt. Nach Abschluss ihres Studiums in Royal Holloway, University of London, war sie von 2006¿2010 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Bevölkerung- und Sozialgeographie der Universität Bayreuth tätig, hier promovierte sie 2010. Danach arbeitete sie als post-doc Research Scholar am History Department der University of California, Los Angeles. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte beinhalten aktuelle theoretische und methodologische Debatten der Kulturgeographie (cultural and new cultural geography), insbesondere Mobilität, Translokalität, Virtualität und Relationalität sowie Diskussionen um das Verhältnis von Kultur und Ökonomie in der Wirtschaftsgeographie. Darüber hinaus beschäftigt sie sich mit Fragen der Migration und Integration vor allem im Bereich kommunaler Integrationspolitik. Ihre regionalen Schwerpunkte liegen in Ostafrika, vor allem Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya und Komoren.
