Instead of being digested in the small intestine, lactose now reaches the large intestine (colon) and fermented therein. Causes of lactose intolerance are heredity, intestinal surgery, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, chemotherapy, metabolic disorders, age, hormonal disorders and imbalance, celiac disease or gastroenteritis. Symptoms of lactose intolerance depending on how much lactase the small intestine makes and start usually 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating or drinking milk or milk products. The symptoms include bloating, pain and cramps in the belly, gurgling or rumbling sounds in the abdomen, loose stools or diarrhea, foamy stools, vomit and nausea.
