WHY READ THIS BOOK?BECAUSE: as St. Caesarius tells us, "although it befits us at all times to be adorned and resplendent with good works, most chiefly on the day of our Lord's Nativity ought [our] works (as He Himself also says in the Gospel) to shine before men." WHY READ THIS BOOK?
BECAUSE: as St. Caesarius tells us, "although it befits us at all times to be adorned and resplendent with good works, most chiefly on the day of our Lord's Nativity ought [our] works (as He Himself also says in the Gospel) to shine before men." [Matt. v. 16.] Advent is a time for reflection and preparation. It is a time of anticipation of Our Lord's coming to us; and, as St. Thérèse of Lisieux reminds us, a period of longing-for the Savior. St. Faustina relates in her Diary that we are still upon the earth in order that we may each die of longing for Christ. Yet, how quickly we put such things out of our minds and how impetuous we are to join good-timing souls who treat the season of Advent as a time of year for plenty of earthly cheer and "Christmas spirit" in the liquid variety. For such people, putting on "the new man" in order to procure the proper garment for celebrating the Feast of Christmas is likely to be out of the question. St. Caesarius admonishes us that "as often, then, as you lay yourselves out to celebrate either the Lord's Nativity, or any other solemnity of the Church, before all things flee drunkenness, withstand anger, as if it were some raging beast; drive out of your hearts all hatred, as ye would some deadly poison; and let there be among you such love as reaches not to your friends only, but to your very enemies; that so you may say, in the Lord's Prayer, with a safe conscience, Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us." But indeed, "we are," as the Curé of Ars tells us, "weak stuff;" for, St. Bernard among others has adduced: "we are both easily seduced, weak in working, and frail in resisting. If we aim at discerning between good and bad, we are deceived if we try to do good, we fail; if we attempt to resist evil, we are cast down and overcome.-Necessary, therefore," he concludes, "was the Advent of the Savior." Unfortunately, many of us either see no need to prepare our souls for Christmas; or, think that whatever we do along these lines is good enough. This is caused by a lack of adequate reflection; the result of which puts a halt to our spiritual advancement and brings about a reversion as St. Augustine warns. Nevertheless, for those desirous of hearing for profit what great spiritual masters had preached regarding Advent, the Vigil of Christmas, and the Feast of Christmas, we present seven homilies of St. Bernard, St. Caesarius, Pope St. Leo the Great, and Thomas à Kempis, to which we have appended a sermon from St. John Viannney for The Epiphany, which skillfully puts forth the Magi as our models in faith.
