Bosch used images of demons, half-human animals and machines to evoke fear and confusion to portray the evil of man. His works contain complex, highly original, imaginative, and dense use of symbolic figures and iconography, some of which was obscure even in his own time. The correct number of Bosch's existing artworks has been a topic of substantial dispute. He signed only 7 of his paintings, and there is doubt whether every one the paintings on one occasion ascribed to him were in fact from his hand. In adding up, his technique was very high-ranking, and was extensively imitated by his various followers. Nowadays no more than 25 masterpieces are definitively credited to him.
