Mirana's mother fears that if Dursdan never returns, Mirana will be alone and tries to encourage her to find another option. Mirana, in helping a friend determine if a boy is related or not, discovers how closely the families of the Valley have become. She creates a way to track the family lines and helps change a law that will affect generations to come. Tolatrom, Dursdan's brother, has just become a Lord and has no idea how to manage his new House. He's also facing resistance from the older Lords of the Circle who resent his position with a battle-seasoned dragon. This complicates his ability to search for Dursdan. As these two Lost Souls struggle to find a way to bring Dursdan home, they discover things that will change life in the Valley forever.
