This lifestyle of Roosevelt ended up being a disadvantage when his parents sent him away to Groton School since he was not used to people around his age. His bitter memories at Groton made Roosevelt attend and become a pioneer at Harvard. Roosevelt took subjects that would be useful in his political careers, such as government, economics, English, and public talking. During his late college years, Roosevelt met and fell in love with Eleanor Roosevelt, a distant cousin he had first met at a family Christmas celebration in 1898. A year before his completion at Harvard, he asked Eleanor to marry him.

In his last term, The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which provoked Roosevelt to declare war.
