When pathogens attack the human body, the body's mechanism of ridding itself of the pathogen is either by vomiting it out or passing it out from the intestines through loose stools (diarrhea)
Recently I have a patient who came to my clinic with a history of vomiting and diarrhea.
She was very pale and was brought to my clinic by her sister because of her general weakness.
While at the clinic she could not control herself and rushed to the restroom to vomit.
Luckily she had the assistance of her sister to clean her up and help her into the consultation room.
I quickly administered an anti-emetic injection and anti spasmodic to relieve her abdominal discomfort.
Then after 15 minutes I gave her an anti-emetic pill (stemetil) and lomotil for her abdominal discomfort and diarrhea.
As she was able to swallow the pills with a small amount of water, she gradually becomes better with the face being less pale and tired.
After another 15 minutes she was well enough to return home.

Diarrhea you are the bane of my daily life
The watery stools will come out whatever I try
Sometimes when I think I had only passed gas
My pants become runny and it is wet in my ass
Each time you cause my stomach to be in pain
The intestines are ready to pass chocolate rain
I have to rush to the toilet as fast as I can
If I can, I will even use the nearest pan
I take Imodium each time I passed out stools
And to stop the diarrhea and toxins I take carbon too
Every time I think that I am getting better
You keep on making me tired and wetter:
Finally the diarrhea stops, I feels so exhausted
I need to rest my intestines and replace my salts
Start with bland and easy-to-digest food
Like porridge and nice home cooked soup

Food poisoning (Gastroenteritis) is an inflammation of the lining of the intestines caused by a virus, bacteria or parasites resulting in leakage of fluid from the cell into the intestine, abdominal pain and vomiting.
Gastroenteritis is normally caused by viruses.
Other pathogens such as bacteria, parasites, and fungus can also cause gastroenteritis.
Most cases of viral gastroenteritis recover without specific treatment.
Antibiotics are not effectual against viral infections.
The main purpose of treatment is to relieve the symptoms of discomfort, vomiting and replace any salts or fluid lost.
The story of a child with chronic diarrhea
A unique case of chronic diarrhea was seen in a baby of one and half years who had diarrhea or watery stools since the age of 6 months.
He probably had a mild case of food poisoning and was treated by his pediatrician who told him to stop his milk and change to soya bean milk and gave him some kaolin.
The diarrhea did not stop so he was brought to another pediatrician who again changed his milk.
Again the diarrhea did not stop.
So he was brought to many other doctors before coming to see me.
Each doctor asked the parents to change to different type of milk or soya bean milk and gave medicines.
By the time the child saw me he was slightly dehydrated but otherwise quite healthy.
He already had X-rays of the abdomen, blood and stools tested by the pediatricians without obvious abnormality.
I had suspected that it was the frequent change of milk that caused the problem in the child.
I asked the parents what milk the child was taking before the diarrhea and advised them to return to that milk but given at half strength.
I also gave the child some mild anti diarrhea medicine.
The parents were to increase the strength of the milk once the diarrhea improved.
After 1 week the child made a complete recovery.
