By intuition and guesswork, not based on a rule or law. Perhaps the secret in this is that there is no basis upon which the Arabic Maqam evidence is built, so that it can be relied upon in depicting melodies, as is the case in Western music. This book is a step towards concentrating Arabic music on fixed rules and moving it from improvisational studies that do not depend on fixed rules to sound scientific study that is based on the rule.
