He leaves home in the middle of the night and rides a few miles before the pain from his still bleeding belt wounds force him to rest. He takes the plunge and arrives at another 24 hr. roadhouse over 200 miles away where he begins to make a new home for himself using the cooking skills taught by his mother and farming skills learned from his brutal father. He was used to working long hard hours in the harvest elds beside his father and he was astute enough to capitalize on the skills learned along the way. He made himself useful as a kitchen hand in the cafe.
