After the success of his first novel, Maugham turned to writing plays, and despite repeated rejection from theater directors for his comic novels, he did not give up and continued until he achieved great success with "Lady Frederick," a play that tells the story of a young man who falls in love with an older woman. Several other sitcoms followed, all of which were huge successes. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Maugham joined the British Military Medical Service in France, then moved to work within British Intelligence, where he was inspired by his experiences there to write his novel "When I Was a Spy".
