Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was a British author most renowned for his series of children's books featuring the character Doctor John Dolittle. Born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, Lofting showed creative promise at a young age, which later culminated in his engineering studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. During World War I, while serving in the Irish Guards, Lofting conceived of the Dolittle character in letters to his children, as he sought to spare them the horrors of war.
