Information systems have the potential to provide human benefit in a number of areas including: improvement of education, provision of social and other services to the public, health and well-being, work-life balance, environmental sustainability, democracy and self-determination, freedom, emancipation, poverty reduction, and social equity. However, most studies within Information Systems relate to a business context rather than directly to human benefit. When dealing with human benefit, system stakeholders may have different objectives regarding a system's use, its distribution, and the way research about it is funded and promoted. This different adoption and diffusion focus is likely to have a strong impact on the way knowledge is disseminated. Such differences warrant careful study and the development of appropriate theory for how to accomplish improved diffusion and adoption of systems for human benefit in practice. Each of the papers in this e-book develops a design theory for or an instantiation of a new kind of System for Human Benefit.
