The legend concerns a knight of the Middle Ages who falls in love with a peasant girl. The ruling aristocracy takes umbrage and the knight mysteriously disappears. The girl awaits his return through the ensuing centuries. One of the soldiers discovers that he is the knight returned and is reunited with his true love. The narrator finishes, as he began, with his thoughts on love and peace.
