Causes of pink eye are viruses, bacteria, allergies (both eyes are affected), a foreign object in the eye, a blocked tear duct (especially in newborns), metabolic disorders, liver and kidney diseases, hormonal imbalance and changes (postmenopausal women, disorders of thyroid function), medical conditions (diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma), vitamin A deficiency, an acidification of the body, dry eyes, exposure to wind and sun, environmental factors (chemicals, fumes, smoke) and an impaired immune system.
