The play's subtitle includes "An Elegy on a Civil War," and although we know that its Spanish author means and depicts the experiences of its two protagonists during the bloody events of the Spanish Civil War, here, in his abstract allusion, he intended it to be a symbol of human suffering in any other civil war that has raged and raged throughout the world. The tragedy, destruction, and ugliness are the same, whether they occur in Spain or Iraq, for example. The author takes the horrors of war as a marginal event in a narrative, here through the couple Paulino and Carmela, one as a fearful, hesitant character, the other impulsive and moved. Both elevate the human event to the furthest extent, and both never fail to remind us that we are like them in similar circumstances. We may champion Paulino's courageous stances, but we will not be ashamed to express our affinity for the coward Paulino, because in any case, we must be the son of one of them or one of the killers. The play "Carmela" is a possible confirmation of a fictional story within a realistic, dramatic historical context. It is also a lesson in the certainty of the human condition in times of devastation. By presenting the play "Carmela" to the Arab reader, we want to focus on a common human theme and to give it its due in translation, after it has been translated into many languages ¿¿and presented on various international stages and in various languages, just as Sanches Sinistra is considered one of the most important theatrical voices in Europe and the world.
