Black Forest exemplifies the unusual, almost Oulipian style of Mréjen, as the book for the most part lacks a traditional plot, though there are recurring themes and characters. Instead, the novel is composed of vignettes that narrate deaths with a paradoxically detached intimacy the subject is lofty, but Mréjen is never pretentious. A review in Le Monde noted the difficulty of writing about death and said that Mréjen "accomplishes in the tour de force" of successfully addressing her subject.

Mréjen has said that when writing Black Forestshe was inspired by the start of "Six Feet Under" episodes.

Like Mréjen's other novels, Black Forestreceived positive coverage in France's major literary publications, from L'Humanité to Le Monde.

Translator Katie Assef is known for her translation of French noir fiction into English.

Val érie Mr éjen (b. 1969) is a writer, filmmaker, and mixed media artist. She has written five novels, most recently Troisi ème personne (2017 ), and exhibited widely in France and abroad, including in a solo retrospective at the Jeu de Paume gallery in Paris. She is an alumna of residencies at Villa Medici in Rome and Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. Mréjen's first featurelength film, En ville, codirected with Bertrand Schefer, was a Director's Fortnight selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, and her children's play, Trois Hommes Verts, premiered at the Th é âtre Gennevilliers in 2014.
