had been in her dreams for the past five years. The passage of time had been kind to him, Abbi noticed after a fleeting glance that made her heart race and filled her with apprehension. Arm in arm with the lawyer, she descended the two steps to the floor where the conference room was located. She accepted a glass of wine and chatted with her colleagues as if nothing in the world could affect her, as if she weren't desperately and intensely trying to suppress the deep pain of an old wound that had unexpectedly reopened.
But no, there was nothing unexpected about the suffering her short-lived relationship with Zach McGuire had caused her. Perhaps her stepfather, almost always so false and hypocritical, was honest when he told her: "Vacation love affairs happen, Abbi, they happen in life; they're part of the experience, but they should never be taken seriously. We all get our hearts broken sometimes, but most of us recover quickly."
However, she hadn't recovered from her affair with Zach McGuire, she hadn't gotten over him. She still clearly remembered his last words, full of false promises and whispered next to her mouth as they parted: "I'll be back as soon as I can, nothing will separate us." And that was the last she heard from him.

Abbi shifted her weight onto her right leg so that her back was to the distracting group. This was a protective measure against the almost irresistible temptation to turn her back. eyes in that direction, despite the fear of meeting his, something she found impossible to bear, despite being fully aware that, sooner or later, she would have to face Zach. As difficult as it was for her to accept, Zachary McGuire, Abbi Gervais's former lover, was now the president of the multinational that had acquired Zenith, the company that could have belonged to Abbi if it weren't for her stepfather's manipulations.
Abbi brought her glass back to her lips and was puzzled to find it empty. She looked around to see where she could put it and shook her head when a waiter offered her a refill.
"Come on, Abbi, honey... relax and have a drink, just for once," Ben Turner said coaxingly, his eyes admiring her new haircut, which covered her forehead with a glossy fringe. Then he stared down at Abbi's mouth. "I've never seen you down a drink so fast."
"That's because you don't know me very well, Ben." Abbi's voice, modulated, had an attractive French accent, due to her childhood in France.
Raising his eyebrows and still staring at her, Ben drained his drink and reached for another.
"I'm willing to change that any time you want," Ben said, his gray gaze sending out the message of a known womanizer.
Abbi didn't answer. No matter how clearly she told him, Ben wouldn't understand that, even if his wife and children weren't there, she'd never be tempted by a man like him.
Turning around, Abbi met the sympathetic gaze of Beverly Crane, a secretary. Abbi smiled and shrugged philosophically. But she soon regretted the gesture, as the young woman whispered confidentially in her ear:
"My God, Abbi, the new boss is amazing. Have you noticed him? Have you spoken to him yet?"
"No," Abbi replied.
Beverly had been referring to the now, the present, not to a past in which, yes... yes, she had spoken to him. She had done more than just talk.
