"Fifty years later, read the reasons why without the Athens Polytechnic uprising there would be no post-political democracy. The Athens Polytechnic Uprising was a spontaneous - without party guidance - climax in the struggle for freedom and democracy. The Uprising got imprinted strongly in the popular consciousness because it contained the concept of "sacrifice", which acts as a beacon for nations and peoples. It is one of the historical events that helps every nation maintain its self-respect. The student movement is the one forced the dictator Papadopoulos to launch the Marquezini experiment to politically legitimize his regime. If that maneuver had succeeded, Greece would have been locked in a tutelary pseudo-parliamentarism. The November uprising paved the way for the fall of the dictatorship, even if the Cyprus tragedy played the role of catalyst. In this sense, the Athens Polytechnic Uprising is the founding "myth" of the post-political democracy. After all, every great historical event takes on the dimensions of a "myth". Without the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, Greece might have followed a path similar to that of Chile: The bloody dictator Pinochet took over in a coup in 1973 and remained in power (as president and head of the Armed Forces) until 1998! He never went to jail! The political leaders of the Post-colonialism owe their careers to the "tide of radicalization" of the student movement, which imposed the commandeering. If the Polytechnic had not intervened, the parties would have been obliged to politicize for at least eight years in the suffocating framework of the super-superpowers of the dictator-president Papadopoulos. Stavros Lygeros, as a member of the Coordinating Committee in the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, gives his own political and personal testimony about those events."
