She left the kitchen and walked down the short hallway. The wooden floorboards under the old carpet creaked under her bare feet. The old building in a once fashionable suburban neighborhood had been transformed from a mansion to an orphanage to a boarding house before, at the end of the 20th century, undergoing renovations and being divided into apartments. Amber was lucky to have rented one of the ground-floor apartments at a reasonable price in exchange for painting it herself.
He turned on the porch light and hesitated as he saw the shape of a tall person behind the red and blue glass panels at the top of the door.
