If you look on one page of it at the books he referred to, you will be amazed by the abundance of his references, including Ibn Qutaybah, Poetry, Poets, and Songs by Al-Isfahani, The Deaths of Ibn Khallikan, The Treasury of Literature, Noldeke, Mu'jam al-Buldan, Ibn Rustah, and Lisan al-Mizan by Ibn Hajar, Goldziher and others, all of that on one page. I opened it by chance, and these references were not only present on this page. Rather, the rest of the pages of the book are crowded with references in excess of what I mentioned, and if I opened another page by chance, I found in the margin written: Al-Baladhuri, Al-Jahiz, Ibn Qutaybah, Al-Zajjaji, Ibn Khallikan, Al-Dumayri, Al-Bayhaqi, Yaqut, Al-Marzbani, Al-Mubarrad, Al-Qalashandi, Ibn Saad, Al-Isfahani, and Ibn Stone and Khafaji. You will be amazed by the number of books that this foreigner, who is unfamiliar with Arabic, has read, and the diversity of their fields of knowledge, and their spread over decades of time. He reads them searching for cultural "fossils" that he captures skillfully, and re-typesets them to build on them his statements and conclusions that no one had preceded him, and this uniqueness is what gives the book. The value that will remain inherent in it, and make it worthy of permanent reading, over time.
