Are you retired and money is getting to be a little tight? You have a house with a little land and are considering downsizing? That was my situation. With the help of my co-author, Jonny, we converted my vegetable garden shed into a tiny house, so I could convert my big (637 sq. ft.) house into a rental property. The rent checks are over $1,000/mo plus utilities, plus this approach has provided two delightful students, and their dog Cora, with a convenient home next to the stop for the public bus to the university. I love living in a smaller space and I really like those rent checks. This money covers the cost of taxes, insurance and repairs with some left over to support my business, Old Dogs in Training, LLC, and to have more fun. I had my last regular paycheck back in 2011, having decided to go into business for myself. I thought, "40 years in science is enough. I need to learn new things." Knowing nothing about business I made some financial mistakes, but I enjoy working on my business that is designed to help older people (I'm only 75, myself) keep going in spite of major health challenges. This was one of the best decisions I ever made. That plus my vegetable garden, which is all part of the story. Furthermore, my solution is reversible.
