Samuel Sharpe (1799-1881), Egyptologist and Biblical translator, was a banker for most of his life. Upon retirement, he devoted himself, without university training, to Biblical studies. To Biblcial literature he contributed The Hebrew Scriptures, a revision of the authorized English translation (1881); and History of the Hebrew Nation and Literature (1869).
