In 1960, Greece and (then West) Germany came to an agreement for the employment of Greek workers in Germany. Thus, approximately 800,000 Greeks immigrated there to escape poverty and unemployment. One of them is the hero of the book, Vangelis, who runs away from the village and his parents, charmed by promises of an easy and comfortable life. A family heirloom gives him the pass - albeit still a child - to leave for Europe. Except, instead of what he dreamed of, he is faced with social exclusion, the ghetto, the inability to communicate and the title of "gastarbeiter" - the unskilled laborer from the South (which ended up being used as a slur). Therefore, he will try to survive relying only on his will, his stubbornness and the solidarity network he creates with people from other countries, other cultures and religions who, apart from necessity, are united by humanity, tolerance and respect for fellow human beings - their own rules in this no-rule game. Through the eyes of the main character we follow not only the life of the gastarbeiters, but also the story of every person who leaves his homeland with the hope of a better life.
