Dr.Yap was born into a Malaysian Chinese family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She received her primary and secondary education in Kuala Lumpur and later continued her undergraduate studies in Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan. She then furthered her master''s degree and doctorate studies in the University of Arkansas, United States of America. In 2001, she also studied theology and graduated from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Chicago.
