Writing Against Infamy
Harold Kirson (Author) Harold Kirson was a Jewish American soldier and ambulance driver in Patton’s Third Army. An archive of over 600 of his letters traces his journey from basic training to England and then across Europe, where he supported combat troops in France and Germany by evacuating the wounded from clearing stations to hospitals. After V-E Day, as a part of the Army of Occupation, he evacuated not only soldiers but also Holocaust survivors and displaced persons. His letters chronicle the rhythms of his life: navigating Jewish identity and belonging in the Army, sustaining friendships, and grappling with the moral complexity of war and its aftermath. Johanna Frank (Edited By) Johanna Frank is Associate Professor of English at the University of Windsor. She has edited a special issue of Modern Drama on the topic of African American playwright Adrienne Kennedy, published a critical edition of Kennedy’s Diary of Lights with song lyrics by Sandy Chapin, and written on topics such as Gertrude Stein, avant-garde theatre, feminism, and performance art.
