The book pays particular attention to the political and economic contexts of the sites and the often novel institutions arising together with World Heritage designations. As most cases are taken from the Global South, in particular Africa and Asia, the chapters illustrate how a prominent global institution is adapted and transformed when it travels outside its original Western context.
