Part one: The campaigns of the British First Regiment of Foot Guards during the Napoleonic era. IMPORTANT: THE CONTENTS OF THIS BOOK WERE FIRST PUBLISHED IN 2020 AS PART OF,'THE MARCH TO HOUGOUMONT'. This book follows the campaigns of the First (later Grenadier) Guards during the first years of the 19th century, combined the career of one of its most notable officers of the period, Alexander Fraser, Lord Saltoun. Britain was at war with its ancient enemy, France. The wars of Revolution in due course became the emperor's own Napoleonic Wars. This account commences when Fraser was a junior officer and as his famous regiment was sent to Sicily. It continues into Portugal, Spain and the South of France through many engagements, sieges, marches, retreats and advances as the allied armies, under the command of the Duke of Wellington, pushed their enemy back within the borders of its motherland. This volume then principally concerns the Peninsular War as the Grenadier Guards knew it, combined with the correspondence and eye-witness anecdotes of one of its officers who, gaining experience and rank, served in the heart of the conflict. This first volume of this two- volume account contains many useful maps and illustrations. Volume two begins after the conclusion of the Peninsular War and principally concerns the the Guards and Saltoun as they fought in The Campaign of 1815 at the battles of Quatre Bras, Waterloo and during the subsequent pursuit to Paris. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
