The Systems Approach is a way of approaching the design, implementation, and evaluation of complex computing systems in the real world. It involves taking a big-picture view, considering the behavior of the system as a whole, not just the optimization of individual components. The authors applied the systems approach to the study of computer networking with their popular textbook Computer Networks: A Systems Approach. In this book, they have collected a set of essays published since 2020 on a variety of systems topics, with the aim of teaching the systems approach by example. Larry Peterson is the Robert E. Kahn Professor of Computer Science, Emeritus at Princeton University, where he served as Chair from 2003-2009. His research focuses on the design, implementation, and operation of Internet-scale distributed systems, including the widely used PlanetLab and MeasurementLab platforms. He is currently contributing to the Aether access-edge cloud project at the OpenNetworking Foundation (ONF), where he serves as Chief Scientist.Peterson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE, the 2010 recipient of the IEEE Kobayashi Computer and Communication Award, and the 2013 recipient of the ACM SIGCOMM Award. He received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University.
