His life in Texas after the revolution saw him elected to Congress twice and by age 24 serving as Secretary of the Navy. His daring spirit got him into self-made trouble in a gunfight which led to a murder trial; but that same bravado made him a leader among men and spurred his brave actions against marauding Indians, Mexican bandits and an invading Mexican Army. Exhibiting the same bravery, he served as a spy for the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. Born a Kentuckian he died a Texan. This is his story.
