Nor something for which I yearned, A gift of phrasing words in poetry. Rather, it seems a drive compelling To set down with pen meaningful words To make rhyme with my storytelling Things I've seen, felt, and heard. My desire is not for fortune or fame, As words are penned to make them rhyme, Perhaps only to cause sweet refrain, Bring a smile or give a pleasing time. If in my rhyme I make one day brighter As I form my thoughts in simple poetry, Lift a burden or make one lighter, I have used wisely this gift given me.
