After gaining a good achievement in the catering business, he then in 1976 moved to Edinburgh in Scotland. He is married to Syeda, and has five children.Wali has received many awards for his contribution and work in the communities. In 1984 he was appointed as the Justice of the peace, the first Bangladeshi to do so, from 1993 to 1997 he became the first Bangladeshi to be the member of the Honorary Consul in Scotland. In 1995 he was awarded the member of the British Empire (MBE) medal by Queen Elizabeth II, for his services to race relations.
