Born in Angola, Indiana, Wellman began his career writing for pulp magazines like Astounding Stories, Startling Stories, Unknown, and Strange Stories. His stories often blended elements of folklore, mythology, and the supernatural with Southern Gothic sensibilities, creating a unique voice within speculative fiction. Wellman's writing was marked by a deep interest in American traditions, particularly those of the South, and often featured eerie, atmospheric settings.
