Der Cellist der Uraufführung, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, hatte einen starken Einfluss auf die Entstehung des Werkes. Eine Ausgabe von Tschaikowskys ursprünglicher Fassung des Werks, herausgegeben von Raphael Wallfisch und John York, ist ebenfalls erhältlich (EP7673). Dieser von Paul Grümmer herausgegebene Band enthält einen Klavierauszug der Orchesterbegleitung und eine separate Cellostimme.
