To evaluate the efficacy of Triamcinolone Acetonide as a modulator of the inflammatory and cicatricial response in rabbits undergoing extraocular muscle surgery. A prospective, masked, two-stage study was carried out. In the first stage, ten rabbits underwent superior rectus muscle retraction in both eyes. In one of them, 0.15 cc of Triamcinolone Acetonide (40mg/cc) was applied to the tissues surrounding the muscle reinsertion site and, as a control, 0.15cc of 0.9% sodium chloride solution was applied to the equivalent site in the contra-lateral eye. Fifteen days later, five rabbits underwent exenteration of the orbits and the remaining animals underwent the same procedure after thirty days. The material from the muscle reinsertion site was assessed using qualitative and quantitative histopathological analysis (morphometry). In the second stage, with increased surgical aggression, sixteen rabbits underwent the same procedures with exenteration of the orbits after fifteen days, and subsequent histopathological analysis of the tissues.
