Krause's parents raised him with the conviction that the Bible was the inerrant Word of God and the source of truth. As Krause grew toward adulthood, he began to question long-held convictions and closely held truths. Conflict arose with his parents. Physical and intellectual confrontations followed. He began an intense exchange of written letters with his father's only sibling, Bud, who lived in central Europe. He, like Daniel, had questioned the fundamentalist-certitudes in which he had been raised.
