Cooperation transnationale des partis democrates-chretiens en Europe: Documents 1945-1965 [Transnational Party Cooperation of European Christian Democrats: Documents 1945-1965] With this edition researchers gain easy access for the first time to central sources on cooperation between the European Christian Democratic parties between 1945 and 1965. No less than 222 documents from six countries reflect on the early phases of European integration from the perspectives of political parties which shaped the histories of the respective states for many years. Documents from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland have been analysed and selected for this book. Transnational networks are active beyond the level of government, thus contributing to the emergence of a European society. This phenomena is central to Western European post-war history and is demonstrated clearly by the parties working more intensely together across borders. Cooperation between Christian Democratic parties was especially close in the first two decades after the Second World War. As they led most governments in democratic continental Western Europe, their cooperation left its mark on its evolution after 1945. On an institutional level European Christian Democrats worked together in the Nouvelles Equipes Internationales, the forerunner organization of todayâ??s European Peopleâ??s Party. Informal secret meetings of the so-called â??Geneva Circleâ?? between 1947 and 1955 â?? attended by leading politicians such as Konrad Adenauer, Georges Bidault, Felix Hurdes and others â?? played an important role, too. Describing and documenting transnational party cooperation, this work aims to make the relevant sources on the topic available and accessible for further research. For this purpose the editors have evaluated, selected and annotated sources from 15 party and State archives in six countries. Using cross-references to the relevant sources, a thorough scholarly introduction places Christian Democratic party cooperation in the context of Western European history since 1945. An extensive index of politicians with biographical details, an index of persons and a selected bibliography supplement the source section. This book is intended both to facilitate the further reappraisal of the history of European integration and to stimulate a more intensive study of the genesis of transnational networks and political communication. Transnationale Parteienkooperation der europäischen Christdemokraten: Dokumente 1945-1965 is a useful documentation for all those wishing to examine the history of the Christian Democratic parties or the process of European unity more closely: an important basic work, especially enriching for contemporary history, political science and party sociology.
