This Uncommon Solitude captures the myriad and diverse experiences of Red Wheelbarrow Writers during these times of quarantine and the COVID-19 pandemic. We reach out to connect but we can't physically touch each other. We are shaken by news of widespread suffering and death caused by a novel virus that inexorably spirals out of control. We feel powerless and isolated. Ongoing catastrophes of racism and environmental decline trouble our hearts. For many of us, poetry has helped to connect us, one to another, as we share experiences and insights, express our grief and sadness, fears and pain, gratitude and hope. In joining together, we feel our way forward as best we can toward making sense of our transformed world. The Red Wheelbarrow Writers hosts a virtual community of writers bearing witness to this viral isolation, these unfolding crises, through words and images, emotions and spirit. We see our role as chroniclers and interpreters of these unprecedented times. In exquisite detail and broad concept, our words convey anguish and hope, power and humor, despair and loveliness. We hope that each poem brings to you, as it has to us, the exceptional gift of connection during this time of isolation and change.

At Red Wheelbarrow Writers, we believe that so much depends upon community. We are a loose affiliation of working writers who produce independently, and who join together to support, encourage, and sustain one another.Red Wheelbarrow Writers is not a club or non-profit. We have no dues or formal order of responsibility. When we need money, we pass the hat. When we have an important endeavor, we show up. Several times a year we have a Bored Meeting (yes, that's the correct word) that is not at all boring. Anyone can attend with a thought, an idea, a project.We welcome all writers to our monthly Happy Hour to drink wine, share excerpts of works-in-progress, exchange news and views. We often meet for Write-Outs, a day spent writing together in unique settings.Red Wheelbarrow Writers participates in the annual April National Poetry Month with a dedicated Facebook page. Each November, National Novel Writing Month, we collectively write a novel, and in December we come together for a reading of this novel where, as they say, hilarity ensues. For details on all our activities, see Events.Partnering with Village Books and Whatcom Community College, Red Wheelbarrow Writers created Washington Memoir Month. Annually, for the whole month of September, memoir writers gather for classes, readings, weekly Write-Outs and mutual encouragement. Since 2016, we have combined our talents to write, edit, and publish an anthology every other year. See Publications for more information.Red Wheelbarrow Writers was founded in 2010 by Cami Ostman, Laura Kalpakian, and Susan Tive. We have evolved to include hundreds of writers on our mailing list and on our Facebook page. We are located in Bellingham, Washington. We act locally and think globally. In fostering connection among writers, we create community. We invite you to join us.
