The case takes an unexpected but devastating turn when a body is discovered on a local golf course and the victim turns out to be an undercover police officer from an English force. When the body of a local drug dealer turns up in a flat rented by the murdered officer and Bowmaker and his team are pushed to their limits. The investigation is further confused when the evidence throws up a long held secret which threatens to move the case in a completely different direction.
