The focus is on Ted Carrington, the protagonist, as a boy, but begins with him as an adult. On the day the story takes place he has arranged a meeting at the private elementary school he attended as a child to provide a donation that will save this now bankrupt institution. Back then, he was an insignificant, talentless, bullied nobody with self-esteem issues and undiagnosed autism. Despite his low social standing he still managed to mercilessly pick on others he perceived as weaker, especially a morbidly obese girl who had been terribly abused earlier in life, until she turned the tables on him. As a child, it bothered him when people would call him a snake, because he knew it was true. As an adult he has come to not only accept but embrace these irrepressible traits within his personality, combining high intelligence and experience with extreme cunning to become enormously wealthy, powerful and adept at influencing those around him. At the school he is set to meet with three specific administrators, knowing that each of them holds dark secrets. Completely unaware of his true intention for the meeting, they are about to receive a full dose of his unique venom. He takes the three on a seemingly innocent reminiscent journey of his time at the school with the purpose of providing them the chance to change their lives and avoid the unfortunate fate he will otherwise see inflicted upon them.
