This book examines the relationship between Christianity and politics in the early Middle Ages (essentially the fifth to ninth centuries). It explores how Christians first came to start claiming that one had to be a good Christian to be a legitimate king and how that ideology of 'Christian kingship' came to have real political consequences.

Autor

Conor O'Brien was educated at Cork and Oxford, where he undertook research on the image of the Jewish Temple in the writings of Bede. His thesis subsequently formed the basis for an award-winning monograph, Bede's Temple (OUP, 2015). He has held research fellowships at Churchill College, Cambridge and Durham, taught at Sheffield and King's College, London, and been Fellow in History at The Queen's College, Oxford since 2020. His research focuses on the religious history of the early Middle Ages and on Britain and Ireland before the Vikings.
