Hakluyt's subjects range from transcriptions of personal accounts and 'ruttiers' (descriptive charts of voyages) to patriotic attacks against rival nations (especially Spain). Volume 4 includes accounts ranging from the legendary journey of St Helena, the mother of Constantine, from Britain to Jerusalem, to medieval pilgrimages to the Holy Land, to the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
