She was the daughter of Samuel Cabot and Sarah Barrett, and she grew up in a family with strong intellectual and social ties. In 1828, she married Professor Charles Follen, a German-born intellectual and abolitionist, who tragically died in a shipwreck aboard the Lexington in 1840.
