The story takes us through extremely humiliating sexual abuse suffered in his early teens, to him rising to graduate at the top of his high school class. He then falls into two failed marriages that create much of the same damage again. Then he takes a third wife, that will help him deal with his past, and later, difficult health issues. Both he and his wife become very successful in business, only to have Shawn become sick with cancer, and then suffer a series of strokes. While they created three businesses, they sold two, with Shawn continuing to work at his business until the third in the series of strokes forced him to retire, no longer being able to do the work. His wife is still helping Shawn make improvements every day.
