In a theoretical section, the importance of authenticity and authentic texts in past and present foreign language teaching in German is first examined. The empirical section contains suggestions for guidance based on interviews with seven teachers on the topics of selection criteria and methodological recommendations for authentic texts in A1 courses. The result is a catalogue of criteria that enables the selection of texts suitable for beginners. In a second part, a collection of approaches was compiled that were particularly popular with the respondents or found to be particularly productive. The results of this study represent only a small selection of the possibilities for using authentic materials in A1 teaching, but they nevertheless constitute an exciting selection that should make it easier for many teachers to work with authentic texts in beginner classes.
