The son doesn't realise that Cherry is a gold digger. His mother sees through the girlfriend from the beginning & the conflict begins. Cherry, on the other hand, has decided that she will have the life Laura has, albeit through Daniel rather than working for it. She therefore goes all out to drive a wedge between Laura and Daniel, with some of her tricks. Laura makes a bad mistake half way through the book that sets the scene for the rest of the book.
