Otjiherero is a South Western Bantu language, mainly spoken in Namibia and outside its borders in Botswana and Angola. The present study is a documentation and survey on oral literature of the Otjiherero, with the primary purpose to investigate the form and meaning of the praise genre in order to pinpoint their essential features. The present study is a documentation and survey on oral literature of the Otjiherero, with the primary purpose to investigate the form and meaning of the praise genre in order to pinpoint their essential features. Because of the omnipresent nature of the praise genre in everyday Otjiherero discourses, it can be defined as a ubiquitous genre. Therefore, praises are most continually presented in the perfomances of other genres and they are highly valued, and deeply cherished by many people in the community. Praises are presented in dances, songs, wailing dirges, addresses to ancestors, ceremonies, speeches, folktales, modern literature and modern music. The main focus of the analyses of praise texts falls on the distribution of information and how the information status shapes the structure and meaning of the praise. The interactions and relations between internal entities of linguistic expressions that convey the required meaning and effects are interpreted to characterize the overall pattern of Otjiherero praises and the meaning conveyed by such structures.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part is the overview which defines praises and explains their uses in the community and outlines the sources of praises. The second part is about analyses and interpretation of praise texts, followed by a conclusion. The appendix contains an extensive textual documentation, consisting of transcripts of the Otjiherero performances and their English translations.

In seiner vorliegenden Arbeit untersucht und dokumentiert der Autor Inhalt, Ausdruck und sozio-kulturellen Kontext der Oralliteratur der Otjiherero, einer bantusprachigen Ethnie, die hauptsächlich in Namibia und in Teilen Botswanas und Angolas angesiedelt ist.
Ein spezielles Genre innerhalb der Oratur der Otjiherero stellen sogenannte "praises", Lobgesänge dar; eine Form der oralen Poesie, die bislang wenig beachtet und analysiert wurde. Diese Loblieder haben innerhalb der Gemeinschaft einen hohen Stellenwert und sind im alltäglichen Leben allgegenwärtig. Sie finden sich meist als Bestandteil der Performanzen anderer Genres wieder, so in Tänzen, Liedern, Klagegesängen, Anrufungen der Ahnen, Reden, Volkserzählungen, Zeremonien, moderner Literatur und moderner Musik. Gegenstand können sowohl lebende Personen, die Ahnen, wilde Tiere, Rinder, als auch Landschaftselemente oder Gegenstände sein.
Den Schwerpunkt der Analyse bildet die Betrachtung der Gestaltungstechniken und der Verbreitung der beinhalteten Informationen. Wie werden gesellschaftliche Erfahrungen, Werte und Vorstellungen der Otjiherero-Gesellschaft in dieser Erzählgattung sprachlich umgesetzt und präsentiert?
