He soon establishes that his patients have been infected with bocavirus, a recently discovered virus that normally causes only mild symptoms. Blake's patients, however, are more severely ill than expected, and each is sicker than the one before, to the point that two patients die from their infections. Driven to solve the mystery that confronts him, Blake suspects that the bocavirus is being genetically engineered for use as a biological weapon. As he draws closer to learning the truth, he is opposed by members of the New World Militia, the clandestine paramilitary group intent upon turning the virus into a weapon of war. The Militia's members are strategically positioned to oppose Blake.
