The first volume presents 538 photographs from the excavations at the site itself, in the cemetery an in the immediate surroundings. Their interpretation is faciliated by 48 general and detailed plans which also supply a new presentation of the architecture. The synthesis of field notes, written by R. de Vaux himself and presented according to loci, offers the best commentary on the excavations photographs.
