The Chronicler gleaned information from the citizens of Georgetown, among whom he was born and reared. Although this work was not intentionally biographical in nature, it describes the key players in events which founded this early center of commerce. The opening chapter presents historical background, while subsequent chapters describe the effects of adverse weather on people and trade; construction of canals, bridges and aqueducts; establishment of banks and civic positions; fires and fire companies; churches and cemeteries-for both white and colored persons; the College, Monastery, libraries and schools; and social organizations. Added to this new edition are illustrations and a new every-name, subject and place name index by Wesley E. Pippenger.
